For Ben Gillis, the transition from the Marine Corps to the civilian workforce was a journey built on preparation, community, and connection.
Ben participated in FourBlock as a student in the Fall 2021 Veteran Career Readiness Program before retiring from the Marine Corps in 2022. Following his transition, he began his civilian career as a Senior Talent Acquisition Advisor and later moved into his current role as a Senior Advisor, HR Systems at Occidental Petroleum Corporation.
Ben first learned about FourBlock through a FourBlock Coach/CRI he knew through his military network in Houston. That connection introduced him to a program that would become a cornerstone of his transition.
“FourBlock was the foundation of my transition,” Ben shared. “I don’t think any other program matched the value FourBlock provided.”
After participating in multiple transition programs, including Hiring Our Heroes, Veterati, and ACP, Ben found FourBlock’s combination of career preparation, relationships, and community had the greatest impact on his journey.
Today, Ben continues to give back as a FourBlock alumnus and Coach/CRI, helping other service members navigate their own career transitions.
His advice to the next generation of veterans?
“Join the FourBlock community, you won’t regret it. Do the hard work on the front end, research, prepare, and take the transition seriously. It will pay off in the end. Network, network, network!”
